The autonomous health sciences university of Nepal is called B.P. Koirala Institute of Health Sciences (BPKIHS) Nepal. It is situated in Sunsari District in the sub-metropolitan city of Dharan. The Institute is an India-Nepali partnership. The Institute provides basic, secondary, and tertiary health education to the eastern part of Nepal. The Faculty of Medicine, the College of Dental Surgery, the College of Nursing, and the School of Public Health and Community Medicine are the four colleges that make up the Institute. In addition, the Institute runs a 700-bed teaching hospital with graduate, undergraduate, and diploma programs offered by universities. The Institute offers a number of certificates in addition to Bachelor's, Master's, and Doctoral degrees, including the Doctorate of Medicine (DM).
The postgraduate programs started in 1999, while the MBBS program started on March 10, 1994. The institute was founded on January 18, 1993, and was named for the late Bishweshwar Prasad Koirala, a former prime minister of Nepal.On October 28, 1998, the Institute became an Independent Health Sciences University. In 1993, the Institute assumed control of the 150-bed Eastern Regional Hospital, a public hospital. In addition to adding a critical care area, observational beds, an intensive care unit, and a cardiac care unit, the university increased the number of beds to 700. The amenities include an emergency laboratory, a mobile X-ray, an MRI, a CT scan, and a C-arm. Additionally incorporated were operation rooms with recovery room amenities and a sterilization department.
