The Sikkim Manipal University of Health, Medical and Technological Sciences Act (Act No. 9 of 1995) allowed for the establishment of Sikkim Manipal University (SMU), formerly known as the Sikkim Manipal University of Health, Medical and Technological Sciences, in 1995. It is regarded as India's first public-private partnership for services connected to higher education and healthcare. The university is divided into two campuses: one for technology and the other for medicine.

The Sikkim Manipal Institute of Medical Sciences was founded in 1995 and is a vital component of SMU. India Today placed SMIMS at number 22 in the overall category and number six among India's Top 10 Emerging Colleges in 2022. NIRF 2022 has placed the university in a rank band ranging from 101 to 150.

The SMIMS provides modular courses in paramedical sciences, certificate programs in other fields, and MBBS (bachelor of medicine and bachelor of surgery) and MD/MS (doctor of medicine/master of surgery).
